A man walked into a concourse of a
premium exclusive banking hall in New York and casually strolled towards the
available Teller; half-way to the window, the security and the bank hallway
supervisor grabbed him and pulled him to the side door – he was clearly out of place
from the way he was dressed, surely a man dressed in a cheap suit and shoes,
carrying an old suitcase like him could not be one of their customers, after
all they are a premium exclusive bank. With that in mind, he was shown, rather shoved, into the
exit side door quickly so as to avoid other customer's look of disdain and
embarrassment.
As he strolled out, he turned
around, removed a shabby hat and showed them his ID. It was Mr Henry Ford
(Founder – Owner of Ford Motors);
he was their No.1 customer, banking more than half of the other customers
combined. Long story short, Mr Ford changed bank despite numerous apologies
from the bank.
I must admit, Mr Ford was a bit
unfair because it is a reality of life that people will judge you FIRST by your
external appearance. BUT, again it is a powerful lesson to us all that – though we tag and label people
initially by outward appearance, we should not stop there, find
out more – dig a little deeper. Just
because he is in an expensive suit, does not mean he is a genuine
businessperson, he could be a bank robber or a conman.
But I want to go a little deeper,
I would like to propose that we search inward and see how many times we have
written ourselves out based on the way we look today or in the past. We idolise
others we see on TV, Internet and Newspaper – we compare them to our present and past and we tell
ourselves "we don't belong" to that class and we shove ourselves out.
Pay attention to the inward dialog
that you have when you encounter someone or something that you feel is Superior
to you. What do you tell yourself? Do you disqualify yourself from the race
even before you begin to run it? Remember, you lose 100% of the race that you
don't run, but if you run, even when you don't win the first place you may get
consolation prize and get the experience to run better next time – who knows.
The most detrimental force is not
from others telling us where we don't belong; the most powerful force comes
from within when we tell ourselves that we don't belong. When we reach a place
where we already have convinced ourselves that we don't belong, it does not
matter anymore - no amount of inspiration or motivation will help. At this
moment, the only hope that you have comes from Education -enlightenment -
someone to help you see from within.
My intention today is to inspire
you to think before you say, "I don't belong", how many times you
have said inwardly, I don't belong with people who have incredible wealth; I
don't belong with people who have wonderful marriages and family; I don't
belong with people who have more money than the can spend in their entire life;
I don't belong with people who are learned…and
with that you walk away from their presence and deny yourself the opportunity
to get what you know you earnestly desire.
The fact that you see and desire
those things, it is a proof that there is something in you that says – we belong with that, give it a
go – besides you have
nothing to lose, since even if you lose, you gain experience and wisdom.
My Counsel?
Get Closer to the people who have
what you desire, clearly they know and do something you don't. Pay the Price it
takes to Learn and Apply the Knowledge from them and for heaven's sake, Stop
Idolizing and Worshiping them –
give them their due respect but remember they are just like you but with little
knowledge and experience that you need.
Blessing Your Way
